Formula

xˉ=x1+x2+⋯+xnn\bar{x} = \frac{x_1 + x_2 + \cdots + x_n}{n}

The mean is the sum divided by how many values there are.

range=max⁡−min⁡\text{range} = \max - \min

The range measures how spread out the data is.

How to use this calculator

  1. Paste or type the numbers.
  2. Press Calculate. The data is sorted for you to find the median.

Worked example

Data: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9

Sum = 40 and n = 8, so the mean is 5.

The middle two values are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5. The mode is 4 and the range is 9 − 2 = 7.

Frequently asked questions

What if no value repeats?

Then there is no mode. If several values tie for most frequent, all of them are listed.

Mean or median — which should I use?

The median is less affected by extreme values, so it often describes skewed data better.
